Burdette Park on Evansville’s West side was the place Elise and Eric chose to have their engagement session photographed. It was a gorgeous day and we made the most of the vast scenery in and near the park to get some great images. The couple brought a few things near and dear to them: guitars, flannel and fishing poles! They will be married in September and I’m very excited about photographing this happy couple again.

Kayce and Cameron met me at USI (it’s where they went to school, man!) for a fun afternoon of photos, lots of snuggling (them) and lots of hiking (all of us). USI’s campus has so many lovely little areas that serve as a great backdrop for photos. I was so happy with the images, that I decided to make a big collage of my favorites. Thanks for a great day, Kayce and Cameron, looking forward to your wedding in November!

Why Hire a Professional Photographer and Not A Friend or Family Member Who Has A Nice Camera?

A good friend of mine, let’s call her Andrea, is very unhappy with her wedding photos, taken for free by a family member who had a nice enough camera and liked to dabble (not professionally) with photography. Here is her experience:

“My husband and I were offered “gift” photography of our wedding by a family member. This particular family member had an art degree, had spent a considerable amount of time working in photo processing, and I had seen her work from college. I loved the idea of her photographing my big day. She was a cherished family member (still is!), was my inspiration for majoring in photography myself, and was offering her services for FREE (our budget was pretty tight).

What I didn’t take into consideration was that she had no real experience photographing weddings. She had been doing photo work for a long time, but not weddings. Combine that with the fact that her style did not match my own and that her equipment was of lesser quality than the hobbyist gear I used for school… In the end I was disappointed.”

Andrea has told me on more than one occasion that she doesn’t even like to look at her wedding photos and wishes she had gone with a professional. She married the love of her life (an event that can’t be repeated) and doesn’t have great photos that make her happy! Her family member’s heart was in the right place, but she took on a job she was not prepared to handle. I have heard of many other people who had a non-pro shoot their wedding and the results ran from disappointing to disaster. A lot of the time the friend or family member is just trying to help, usually offering the photography free as a wedding present. The couple, at first, thinks that this is a great deal—Hey! We don’t have to pay! If you are not concerned with the quality of the photos then it’s not a big deal, but if you are really expecting something special to enjoy for years to come, you should make room in your wedding budget to hire a professional photographer.

Here’s exactly why:

•	A professional photographer has some sort of education in photography. It could be a college degree, workshops and seminars or they could be self taught from books and the Internet. Most pros keep studying and learning after they start their businesses, to stay in touch with the latest technology, software and trends. It is a skill, a trade that has to be studied and learned. Non-pro friends or relatives with nice cameras (we’ll call them Amateurs for the rest of this article), are not as likely to have college degrees in photography and although they may take a workshop or two, it’s not anything they are serious about.

•	A professional photographer makes their primary living from photography. They have the time to give their work and their clients all of their attention. The photography jobs they get pay their mortgages, groceries, photo equipment, business expenses. It’s how they LIVE. They are invested in the job you hired them for because it’s all they do and it pays their bills. Amateurs do photography in their spare time only. They do it for free or super cheap because they know they don’t have the experience. They have jobs in other fields. Photography is a hobby for them and nothing more.

•	Professional photographers have experience. Buying a high end camera and printing some business cards does not make an instant professional. Like all trades, it takes time, effort, study, education and lots and lots of shooting experience. Pro wedding photographers have photographed hundreds of weddings and know how to handle any situation on the wedding day. This includes not only the production of beautiful photos but also expertly dealing with the bride and groom and their entire family (no, simple task!) Amateurs may have never shot a wedding before, or have only done a few as favors. They don’t have the experience of dealing with such a big responsibility and can crumble under pressure. They could get cold feet and back out before the wedding or worse yet, on the day of the wedding. I have heard of people who do this and I find it appalling. But what could anyone expect of them? They have no experience, no vested interest in shooting those weddings, they’ve been paid very little or not at all, they don’t depend on the shoot to make a living—why should they truly care? What if their kid is sick the day of your wedding? They’re going to say “sorry” and stay home, that’s what. If they do make it to the wedding and shoot, what if the photos are terrible? You can’t redo a wedding day and if you didn’t even pay them, where is any kind of restitution?

•	Professional photographers use professional camera equipment. They only use top of the line cameras, lenses, flashes, etc and keep them in good repair. They also carry backups for everything: backup camera body, backup lenses, backup batteries, backup lighting. They do this because they know that things break, malfunction and wear out and you have got to say “no problem!” and just grab a replacement right out of the camera bag. Amateurs might have the same equipment, but not the education and experience to know how to fully use them. Some may have a mid-range camera with a pop up flash and a cheap lens. They have no extra lighting. Backups are probably not an option or even a thought. They might not even remember to charge their batteries or bring enough data cards.

•	Professional photographers have a working relationship with their clients. They email, phone and meet with their clients many times before the wedding day. They work on the booking and contract with you, the engagement session, the wedding proofs, the album design and delivery. This person is reachable and has answers for any and all questions and concerns of their clients. They have business insurance, pay their taxes and often have an official business entity, like an LLC. Pros have a higher duty to their clients, a positive businesslike attitude and practice good business ethics. An amateur has no reason to have any of the above, they don’t need to be insured—they are liable for nothing. You have no contract with them, so they have no obligation to you. They don’t have to show up, they don’t have to do a good job. They don’t even have to be nice to your family on the wedding day. There is no customer service with an amateur. They show up, shoot and if you’re lucky, the images won’t suck. That’s it.

As a professional photographer, I have run into the “I have asked a family member/friend/student to photograph my wedding” scenario over and over. I have even heard back from some of those people after the wedding about how much they hate their photos and wished they had hired a pro. It makes me sad. Wedding photography is what I specialize in, I love it and it’s what I do the best. Everyone should have beautiful, fun, amazing looking photos from their wedding day. It’s what I strive to create for my clients. I wanted this article to be more lighthearted and entertaining, but it is about a serious subject and deserved serious treatment. There is nothing funny about a bride crying over crappy wedding pictures.

When Julie married her husband Dan, she told me of a very special part of her day that she wanted me to photograph: the first time her dad saw her in her bridal finery. It made me realize that this is indeed very important, as Dad is usually hanging out with the guys before the wedding and doesn’t usually get to see his little girl until they get ready to walk down the aisle. A lot of times, there is not time for such a meeting before the wedding, but Julie made sure we made time. We had Dad wait in a side aisle in the church with Mom and Julie’s sister to keep him company and to really make it a special moment just for their family. When he was ready, we brought the lovely Julie into the church to meet her father…

It was so beautiful how the tears quickly transformed into laughter with these two. It really showed their special bond. And I have to tell you it is definitely a challenge taking photos with tears welling up in my own eyes!

This Wedding Vignette is the first in a new series I’d like to share with you of my photographs of real experiences at my weddings.

All right! You’ve chosen the one you will marry, you’ve chosen the date, the place, you’ve hired a photographer (hopefully me—ha!) everything is all set and now it’s time for the engagement photos. Scheduling, planning and preparing for this photo session is the next step in the process after hiring your photographer. Engagement sessions are useful and important in so many ways:
•	It’s a great way to get to know and bond with your photographer and see how she works with you two before the wedding day.
•	Your photographer will be able to really study how you two pose and react together. They can have a heads up if you are a blinker or a squinter and can make adjustments to help you feel more comfortable/keep those eyes open!
•	You and your fiancé will be sharing a very special afternoon together. You will be doing a lot of cuddling, kissing, holding hands, etc during your session. Who wouldn’t love that?
•	You’ll have tons of gorgeous images to use for Save The Date cards, newspaper announcements, to give to family members, to use for favors at your reception and for sharing online.

Ok, so what do we wear? This is probably the most common question I get from couples who are preparing for their session. There are no hard rules, but here are a few suggestions I make:
•	Please don’t wear white shirts. Two main reasons: it’s kinda boring and in certain photo situations can get washed out. All black shirts are a no-no too, detail can be lost in certain photos and you’re left looking like a floating head.
•	I like color! Don’t you? You may want to shy away from screaming neon pink, but any solid hue is fine. Muted tones/earth tones are lovely too. Each of you wearing something in the same color family works nicely too, like if you wore a light blue shirt or dress and he wore a navy shirt.
•	Patterns, stripes, dots, plaid-bring it on! As long as the pattern in question isn’t a large pattern, like huge polka dots. Patterns that are too garish, large and strong tend to take all the attention in the photo, where it’s all you can see. The attention should be on your faces.
•	Accessorize! Belted shirts and dresses look great. Bracelets, necklaces, scarves, pretty earrings and sexy shoes. For him, a nice watch, (manly) bracelets, a stylish tie if he’s wearing a button down and nice shoes that go with his outfit.
•	Are you blue jeans people 24/7? Or do you both enjoy dressing up? You can always bring 2 outfits and change it up.
•	Are you a loyal college alum or have favorite sports teams? You could wear their tshirts, sweatshirts or jerseys—but it looks best if you BOTH do that.
•	Most importantly: wear what you feel most comfortable in and what will make sense with the environment in which your session is to be photographed be it city streets or a country or park setting.

Where should we go? Well, that is something we come up with together. Are you nature lovers? City people? Do you like the water? Are you ok with sitting on the grass or concrete steps? How about:
•	Your favorite nature park/preserve
•	Where he proposed
•	Where you first met
•	Doing an activity you two enjoy together. Such as miniature golf, biking, chatting at your favorite coffee shop, hanging out at a flea market or antique shop
•	The streets and alleyways of your city or even a small quaint town nearby
•	An amusement park, county fair or street festival
•	Your favorite pub

Can we bring props? Absolutely! Anything that you find inspiring and/or has meaning in your relationship can be brought along and utilized in the session:
•	Your dog!
•	A large empty photo frame
•	A bunch of fresh flowers
•	Balloons
•	Colorful umbrellas
•	A picnic basket with snacks and wine/wine glasses—don’t forget a colorful blanket!
•	Rent or borrow a bicycle built for two
•	Your car or motorcycle
•	A handmade sign with your names and wedding date
•	Your favorite books
•	Any special items from your courtship: a stuffed animal he gave you, love letters, etc.
•	Pictures, chalkboards, candy, musical instruments, your initials, bubbles, old cameras—endless possibilities! just make sure they seem relevant to the theme you want for your shoot

Wow! That was fun! What do we do with the pics now? So many options, here’s a few:
•	Have a guest book made where your wedding attendees can see your engagement session and sign on the pages. (I offer a 20 page 11×8.5 signing book)
•	Create Save The Date cards—these are usually sent out several months before the invitations. It gives your guests a “heads up” and a little preview of your photo session. These work especially well as magnets, which can be ordered online thru websites like Vistaprint.com.
•	Print and frame the images for gifts of appreciation to family and wedding party members
•	Print and frame images to display at a special table at the reception
•	Use the image for your wedding invitation design
•	Use them in a slideshow about your courtship at the reception
•	There is a ton of cool DIY stuff you can do with your engagement images, one that I like is making glass magnets out of them. Here’s an online tutorial http://www.diylife.com/2007/09/13/making-magnets-from-flat-glass-marbles/

With all the options, your engagement session could end up being just as fun and memorable as your wedding! Be sure you choose a photographer that has a lot of ideas and is open to yours. You’ll end up with great images and memories of the day.

Alexandra and Kyle chose the last day of 2011 to start their first day of their new life together at St. Boniface Catholic Church. I’ve never photographed a New Year’s Eve wedding before, and I must say, I was entranced with the whole evening. There was romance, style, beauty and moving emotion. It was a pleasure spending the first few minutes of 2012 at Old National Bank Atrium with A&K and their families and friends who were definitely in a party mood! Many congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Johnson!
